Sitting in the center of the state of Iowa, and home to the AAA Iowa Cubs, Des Moines offers a plethora of outdoor activities. The city sits at the intersection of multiple rivers and is a summer paradise with lakes and rivers galore. We have outline some of the best parks below for an outdoor party of your design.
Drake Mansion
Right off I-235 and named for the local university, Drake, this park has free picnic tables available. There is a playground, splash area, all sorts of courts, and grills. They also have an open shelter and an enclosed shelter. We could not find any information about rentals so feel free to use them.

Fort Des Moines Park
This 135 acre park lives on a former calvary post. The prize of the park is a 14 acre lake. It has a children’s playground and an arboretum. Booking a covered shelter is simple and can be done via this link. Each shelter can house up to 140 people and cost $75 for a full day.

MacRae Park
This is one of the highlights of the outdoor spaces in Des Moines. This park sits on a bluff and has fantastic views of downtown along with a playground. It overlooks and at parts runs right on top of the Raccoon River. An enclosed shelter houses 44 people, is newly built, and costs up to $210 for a weekend rental. This includes a grill and 11 tables.

The Conservatory
On the east side of the river, close to the capital, is this fully customizable, smaller wedding venue. A Saturday wedding in season costs between $3,500-4,000 for the full day. They also have other options for rehearsal dinners as well.

The Tea Room
Another location in the heart of downtown, this place has two fantastic rooms that total almost 8,000 square feet. This smaller venue offers the intimacy that other venues in Des Moines lack. The Tea Room was recently renovated from a fire in 2017. No prices are listed online. The larger Tea Room comprises 5,000+ square feet and they assist with setup and take down.
